Can Cassia Cinnamon Support Healthy Fasting Blood Sugars

What Is Cassia Cinnamon?

Did you know that there are different types of cinnamon? Yes, you heard that right. Cinnamon has different types, and no two are the same. Cinnamon is a very popular spice all around the world. It has been in use for centuries. Along with its taste, cinnamon is also very popular for its medicinal properties.

Origin of Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a spice that is extracted from the Cinnamomum tree. The inner bark of this tree is where the cinnamon is usually collected from. The tree bark is broken down, and the strips are dried under the sun or an industrial dryer. Once the bark is dry, it curls up and forms into separate sticks. These sticks are then sold to the masses. Some people prefer the powdered form of cinnamon, which is also available on the shelves.

Types Of Cinnamon

As discussed previously, cinnamon has different types. The most common two types are:

Cassia Cinnamon

This type of cinnamon is extracted from the Cinnamomum Cassia tree, which is also known as the Cinnamomun Aromaticum. This type originated from the South of China. It is because of its birth land that this type of cinnamon is also called Chinese Cinnamon.

Once this type of cinnamon got popular, many people started growing it, and now you can find different variants of its subspecies all over the world. The physical appearance of the Cassia Cinnamon is darker and thicker than its cousin. The texture can also be considered to be rough in comparison.

Cassia is the most popular type of cinnamon as it is widely available and very light on the pocket. It is mostly used in cooking and for some specific medical treatments such as blood sugar levels.

Ceylon Cinnamon

Belonging to Sri Lanka and India, this type of cinnamon is also known as the true cinnamon. Ceylon cinnamon is taken from the Cinnamomum Verum tree. Again, the actual cinnamon is extracted from the innermost bark of the tree.

The physical appearance of Ceylon is a bit lighter in color. When dried, the sticks form to be much tighter and are not as rigid as Cassia Cinnamon. These qualities help it stand out and thus is considered to be more on the expensive side. It is most commonly used to cook with rather than being used for its medical properties.

How does Diabetes Work?

Diabetes is a chronic illness that is a lifelong ailment. The main problem is how it affects your bodily functions, exclusively how the human body breaks down food and then turns it into energy. The breakdown of food into energy is a natural process in the body. Our body uses insulin, secreted by the pancreas, to assist the sugars in your blood to make their way to the cells in your body.

Now, what happens in Diabetes is that your body either completely stops producing insulin or the capacity to use the insulin produced decreases. It is because of this that the sugar in your blood reaches a peak, and this, in turn, can cause severe health problems. Diabetes has no particular cure; the only thing one must do is to consume a healthy diet. This will help you prevent Diabetes if you are at risk or even help you slow down the digression of your health if you are already diabetic. Many people lean towards ingredients such as cinnamon to control Diabetes and even prevent it. Let's see if their claims hold merit.

How Does Cinnamon Help With Diabetes Treatment?

People who suffer from Diabetes often live a life of dietary restrictions. Since there is no cure, these patients are left to their devices and have to use whatever remedies and recommendations that come their way. One of the most commonly given recommendations is the use of cinnamon and not just any type but the Cassia Cinnamon.

There are several ways that cinnamon affects your Diabetes, as claimed by people. Some have even described it as a replacement for sugar in many different deserts. However, there is no concrete research that favors the use of cinnamon as a treatment for Diabetes. There have been researches that prove how consumption of cinnamon has been reportedly helpful in reducing blood sugar levels along with the total cholesterol and other components. In this research, it was found out that, despite being effective, there are no doses or durations that are decided or calculated to prescribe to a patient.

The question now remains, how exactly does cinnamon help with Diabetes. Like we discussed earlier, Diabetes is caused due to imbalances in the levels of insulin. Cinnamon is claimed to lower blood sugar levels by mimicking the functions of insulin. It helps the sugar in your blood to enter the cells. This way, your body is not only reliant on insulin to provide energy to your body cells.

Many experts have put this to test and found that patients who took cinnamon regularly along with their diabetes medicine had significantly lower blood sugar levels. Many times it is seen that diabetics face diabetic episodes right after taking meals as they instantly spike the sugar levels in your blood. These diabetic episodes can be quite dangerous to your health as the sudden spike in your blood sugar levels can damage the cells in your body. To prevent this from happening, you can take cinnamon. Cinnamon will help you regulate your blood sugar levels right after you've had a meal.

An observation that relates to this is that cinnamon helps slow down the emptying of your stomach, and because of this, your cells do not immediately get the sugar rush keeping you safe from a diabetic rash. Other claims include that cinnamon halts the digestion of carbs in the small intestine, so the sugar does not enter the bloodstream.

This is the way cinnamon helps treat the increased blood sugar levels and helps them come down a notch. Therefore, if you want to keep your blood levels regulated, you must consume cinnamon regularly.

Minimizes Side Effects Of Diabetes

The wonders of cinnamon are not just limited to bringing down blood sugars, but it can also help lessen the impact of all the side effects that come with Diabetes.

Since people with Diabetes have problems such as heart complications, cinnamon can also aid with easing these complications. It helps decrease bad cholesterol that leads to further heart problems.

Can You Use Cinnamon To Prevent Diabetes?

This is another claim made by people that cinnamon can be useful in preventing Diabetes. This is a very bold claim, but there have been studies that suggest this. People who consume cinnamon on a daily basis have been found to have improvements in their blood glucose levels. The more dosage you take, the more your blood glucose levels are regulated.

People who consume cinnamon maintain their blood sugar levels, and this can, in turn, prevent them from having Diabetes. The only catch is that you must be regular with your intake of cinnamon so that your blood sugar levels do not spike at all.

How To Consume Cinnamon?

Most people who have taken cinnamon for prolonged periods of time have taken them in quantities such as a teaspoon or even less. To stay consistent, it is important that you keep a check that you are consuming cinnamon every day. In addition to that, you must ensure that you start with smaller doses first to ensure that you are facing no problems. More importantly, this is an alternative treatment, so you must not wholly rely on it.

Some people make the mistake of leaving their own medical treatments and start taking cinnamon with hopes that this is all they need. It is certainly not true as you might not have the same benefits that other people have had. There is no guarantee that you will see the same benefits that others have, which is why it is very important for you to keep up with your medical treatments and ensure that you do not have very high expectations from cinnamon.

Before doing anything, it is important that you consult your doctor. The doctor will be able to see if your existing treatments are not in clash with cinnamon. If this is the case, you might just disrupt your entire medical regime and make it more difficult for yourself to cope with Diabetes.

Cinnamon can be taken in several different forms. You can either take it as a seasoning on whatever you are eating, be it sweet or savory. Or if you want to gulp it down as is with some water. Many people also take it in their drinks. Sprinkle some in your morning tea or coffee, as it will not only give it a rustic taste but will also give you a great substitute for sugar.

While you consume cinnamon, it is important that you keep a check on your diet and are not using this treatment as an excuse to consume more sugar in the form of cinnamon rolls.
